What is the Energy Matrix and How to Make It Smarter?
The energy matrix refers to the composition of energy sources used in a country or region to meet its demand for electricity, heat, and fuels. It is a key factor in economic development and environmental sustainability, as it determines the predominant energy resources and their impact on the environment.

The Energy Matrix in Argentina
Argentina has a diversified energy matrix, although it remains highly dependent on fossil fuels. According to official data, approximately 60% of electricity generation comes from natural gas, followed by oil and coal. However, in recent years, the country has made significant progress in incorporating renewable energy sources, reaching nearly 15% of total electricity generation from wind, solar, and hydro sources.
While this growth is noteworthy, the method used to measure the contribution of each energy source is crucial in understanding its actual impact. According to Our World in Data, the energy substitution method helps analyze how much renewable energy would be required to replace fossil fuel generation with equivalent efficiency. This perspective is essential for assessing progress toward an effective and sustainable energy transition.
In line with Law 27.191, by December 31, 2025, companies operating in Argentina that consume more than 300 kW of electricity must ensure that at least 20% of their energy comes from renewable sources. Launched in 2015, this initiative aims to drive the energy transition by increasing the share of renewable sources in business productivity while ensuring sustainable energy consumption.

Measuring the Energy Transition
The share of renewable energy in the matrix is often measured in terms of generation volume, but this does not fully capture its impact on reducing fossil fuel use. According to Our World in Data, the substitution method evaluates the efficiency of each source by considering factors such as energy density and conversion losses. Under this methodology, renewable energy may play a larger role than traditional figures suggest. However, its true potential depends on technological advancements and improved grid integration.
